As much as I hate bureaucracy, it may be the only thing standing in the way of the potential chaos of the second Trump term.
Congress likes to flex on presidents and I suspect some of this will even happen to Trump. The first few cabinet selections will let us know how contentious things may be because they will test what little moral fortitude remains in the Republican party. Words still matter and many of the Senators in charge of confirming cabinet positions have signaled doubt about several of the proposed candidates.
Whether or not this doubt proves useful or not is a different story. Trump has been going out of his way to apply pressure personally to anyone who has questioned these choices publicly. He is still in the honeymoon phase where he is trying to be subtle but the threat of who he has been in the past remains. Anyone who disagreed with the man in the past quickly had their career torpedoed and I am sure it’ll happen again. Senators can reliably do one thing and that is whatever it takes to keep their job. Some days it involves pandering to their base, and others it involves placating a moody, childish president who throws a tantrum when he doesn’t get his way.
When a child throws a tantrum, it’s all flash. The dust settles and by the next day they have completely forgotten.
When a man-child throws a tantrum, he can do serious damage to those around him. If the man-child is the president, he can hold the country hostage.
